On the Road Again

I sure got a lot of frantic calls this morning.  The word is out around the neighborhood.

"Oh my gosh!  I heard Jay was rushed to the Huntsman Cancer Hospital for emergency surgery!"

     "You heard what?"

"Yes, what on earth is going on?"

     "He's having his gall bladder taken out this afternoon"

"Oh, that's it?"




You could almost hear the disappointment.  After yesterday, it does seem a little anti-climatic that he would be undergoing such an ordinary procedure.  Of course the callers missed the few hours when we (meaning me) thought that maybe this was all being caused by another tumor in his pancreas...which could mean pancreatic cancer......which could mean.....HOLD IT RIGHT THERE MAMA YOU'RE GETTING PARANOID!

They also missed the big fight between the surgical team and the cancer doctors.  The surgeons wanted to wait until the inflammation went down. It would be less risky and the stones were pretty small.   Just start the chemo and we'll take it out later if it flares up again.

The cancer docs said no way.   The chemo needs to be started now and it would be an unnecessarily dangerous operation during chemo treatment.   The cancer doctors won this one and within a few hours Jay was saying bye-bye to a non-essential body part.

Seeing him in recovery I was sure the right decision was made.  He was alert, already out of pain and left with just a few small incisions.  He is well on his way back to the starting line of his fight against the myeloma cells.  We will never again have to worry about his gall bladder getting stoned.

It's great to have this behind us and get on the road again.  This is certainly not the first diversion we will encounter.  Maybe it was a good thing to learn right up front that this will be a long and twisty road on our way to the corner of healthy and happy.
